(Brazil).- The global CEO of the Hard Rock hotel chain, Jim Allen, is closely following the bill to free casinos and bingos in Brazil, waiting for it to be approved before making announcements in the country.
The bill is on the agenda of the Senate's Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ). "He's just waiting for this bill to be approved to decide where to build something here," Tourism Minister Celso Sabino told Coluna do Estadão. The executive was not contacted.
Despite resistance from the evangelical caucus, Senator Irajá (PSD-TO) has already presented a report in favour of freeing casinos. Approved in the House, the bill awaits a vote in the Senate. The measure has the support of Sabino and Vice-President Geraldo Alckmin, Minister of Development, Industry, Trade and Services. However, the government has not yet formalised how it will direct its caucus to vote.
With several casino units in the United States, the Hard Rock chain is facing difficulties in establishing itself in Brazil through partnerships. As reported by Estadão, one of the chain's eight-hotel megaprojects failed due to construction delays and investigations by the Federal Police involving Venture Capital Participações e Investimentos (VCI), the group's former partner in the country. According to the Hard Rock Hotels website, there are currently only three units under construction: Fortaleza (CE), Gramado (RS) and Sertanópolis (PR).
Celso Sabino says that if Congress authorises casinos, Jim Allen intends to set up other units in Brazil managed directly by the head office. "The project of resorts integrated with casinos will undoubtedly arouse even greater interest from the big chains," he said.
